NEW YORK — Pfizer has launched an entire new medicine cabinet to help patients avoid stomach issues and the gastrointestinal side effects of its heartburn drug Nexium, the company said Thursday. Nexium, the generic version of Prilosec and its generic version, treats heartburn, which is common among older adults. It also treats stomach ulcers, which can be caused by acid, or ulcers caused by medications, such as over-the-counter pain relievers. Pfizer is the biggest maker of new medicines in America, with more than $2.5 billion in sales last year. Nexium is a prescription drug, and can be bought at any pharmacy without a prescription in some U. S. states.

While Prilosec, a heartburn drug, is widely prescribed, other over-the-counter drugs are being developed for other problems.

Pfizer is trying to develop its new heartburn drug, Nexium, as well as other heartburn drugs. While the new drugs are expected to cost about $10.50 a month for a 30-tablet bottle, they could help patients who have not had heartburn before.

“We are really excited about the opportunity to make these new medicines available to patients without a prescription,” said Peter J. Smith, the CEO of the National Heart Foundation. Smith said he has been trying to conceive a long-term plan to bring heartburn drugs into the market.

Pfizer also is looking to get the company to develop more research on new anti-inflammatory drugs.

In a conference call with reporters, Smith revealed the new drugs are still under review by the Food and Drug Administration, but they are still approved by regulators and the Food and Drug Administration has said there is no new drug development. The new heartburn drugs are called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which are a type of medicine that slows stomach acid production and makes it harder to get relief from the pain of heartburn, he said. “What we’re trying to do is to get a new drug to bring this back into the market. That’s something we need to think about,” said Smith. He said the drugs are also expected to be launched in the U. in the next several weeks.

“We are going to bring this into the market in a couple of weeks,” Smith said. “It’s already been announced in several languages and we will have some final details before we launch the new drug in the U. S.”

Pfizer’s new heartburn drugs are available in a single pack or a three-pack of the products.

Pfizer is working with the Food and Drug Administration to develop new drugs that will work the same way. In December, it will ask the FDA to approve more than 30 new drugs to treat heartburn. The new drugs are also being developed for other problems.

The companies announced that they will be in business in about four weeks.
