Description

Nexium (Esomeprazole) is a prescription medication used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and ulcerative colitis. It belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Nexium works by decreasing the amount of acid made by the stomach by inhibiting an enzyme called H. pylori. Nexium may also be used to treat stomach ulcers caused by omeprazole. Nexium is available in the form of capsules that are taken orally and is available in the quantity of 30 and 40 mg. Nexium is also prescribed for the management of certain types of GERD, such as Zollinger-Ellison disease and chronic reflux disease (GERD-C). Nexium is also used in the treatment of high cholesterol and high blood pressure. A new report has revealed that prescription drug prices for the over-the-counter version of Nexium (esomeprazole) are significantly higher than the price of its prescription drug, Prilosec.

The new analysis, published in theNew England Journal of Medicine, finds that over-the-counter Nexium prices were up 27% on the market, while Prilosec costs up to $8.99 for the same prescription.

The price increases for Nexium, as well as the over-the-counter versions of Prilosec, have been in the range of $6.48 to $11.99 for a 30-tablet bottle of liquid esomeprazole tablets, compared to $6.29 for Prilosec oral solution. The over-the-counter version of Nexium is also priced at $12.99 for a 20-tablet bottle of liquid esomeprazole tablets.

“Our analysis shows that the prescription drug has been consistently priced above the price of the drug at $9.99 per 30-tablet bottle of liquid omeprazole tablets, and the price of the over-the-counter omeprazole prescription drug was $11.99,” says Dr. Michael O’Leary, a gastroenterology professor at New York University School of Medicine, who led the study.

In an interview with the New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. O’Leary stated that, although the over-the-counter drug is “a prescription drug, it is also a pharmacy drug.”

He explained that “pharmacies and prescription drugs are different from each other.” He added, “I have used pharmacies, pharmacies, and even supermarkets to sell prescription drugs. They all sell the same thing, they all have the same name, same ingredients, they all have the same price.”

Dr. O’Leary also said that the price increases for prescription drugs are “a result of pharmacy consolidation,” which, he added, “is a result of consolidation of prescription drug prices in the U. S.”

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Nexium to treat symptoms of certain chronic pain and acid reflux disease in adults. The drug is also approved to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease in adults. It is also indicated for patients with moderate to severe heartburn, esophagitis, or peptic ulcers.

“There are no known drug interactions for Nexium,” he explained. “The drug is not a narcotic, it is a prescription drug.”

This study shows that prescription drug prices for the over-the-counter version of Nexium were $9.99 for a 30-tablet bottle of liquid omeprazole tablets, and the over-the-counter version of Prilosec was $11.99.
